What Happens to My Family?

Every family has its issues but what happens when the patriarch in the family is not happy with the behaviours of his children? Cha Bong Soon (Yoo Dong-Geun) does not intend to just sit back and take bad treatment from his three adult children – Cha Kang Shim (Kim Hyun-Joo), Cha Gang Jae (Yoon Park) and Cha Dal Bong (Park Hyung-Sik)– and decides to take legal action against them. With such chaos going on in her family, Kang Shim has a tough time focusing on her job as secretary to the president of Daeoh Company and is constantly at odds with the president’s son, Moon Tae Joo (Kim Sang-Kyung), the company director.

Does this drama have a Happy Ending?

Notes

Here is a “Yes, but…”

I am always hesitant to watch these Family Dramas with 40, 50 episodes or more because it is really long and if the ending sucks it might feel like wasted time. The description from AsiaWiki also only looked at a small aspect of the Drama and there are way more plots, relationships and dynamics. But that just as a side note.

Within this drama, one important part is that the father finds out that he is ill and only has a few months left to live. Which is what leads to the whole lawsuit, because he wants to sort his children out before he’s gone, so he doesn’t have to worry about them. Now many many times in dramas these serious illnesses like Cancer in this case are miraculously solved, cured, or were a misdiagnosis. But not here.

This drama actually does not save dad, he dies but after he sees that his children learned a lot and are okay now. He is at peace but that does not make the whole thing easier to watch. I’ve cried a whole lot. Every time a character learns about the father’s condition we are thrown right into their grief, their way to deal with it. And every character deals differently, which I loved about it. It’s not cookie-cutter one size fits all. Their grief fits their character and it is heartbreaking every time.

Other than that it’s a lovely drama with fantastic dynamics. Sure not everything is perfect but what really is?
